Sedation Dentistry is a method of sedation which makes the treatment a relaxing experience. Sedation Dentistry is usually performed in the extraction of wisdom teeth but has many other treatment applications. Sedation Dentistry is great for patients who have a difficult time relaxing or feeling comfortable at the dentist. Sedation Dentistry can also be used in longer procedures. This is particularly useful if the patient has a busy schedule and does not want to make several appointments or prolonged pain. Many procedures may be completed in one visit with Sedation Dentistry.
Sedation Dentistry Options
There are many different sedation options including:
Sedation is administered intravenously. The patient remains conscious, and will be able to understand and respond to the dentist, but will be in a deep state of relaxation. Although the patient is conscious, they typically remember very little, if anything at all, about their experience.
This form is similar to IV sedation, however, it is taken orally as opposed to intravenously. This can be of benefit for patients who are scheduled to receive a number of procedures during one appointment. This can also help shorten the amount of time needed to perform complex procedures.
Commonly referred to as “laughing gas”, nitrous oxide is a colorless and odorless gas, which is inhaled. As with IV & oral sedation, the patient will remain conscious but will have a sense of well being, leaving them comfortable during their procedure.
