Tooth-Colored Fillings and Restorations

Tooth-colored fillings (composites) are a more natural look than traditional silver fillings (amalgams). The tooth-colored material is cured by a special light, shaped, and then polished to match your teeth. Composites also have several other advantages. Composites are bonded which requires less of the existing healthy tooth to be removed. This makes the resulting filling smaller than a normal amalgam filling. Composites look and feel more natural and blend extremely well, making them perfect for front teeth, chipped or broken teeth, closing in gaps, decayed teeth or even worn teeth. Composites are also environmentally friendly because they do not use mercury.

Crowns and Bridges

Crowns

A crown (or cap) is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface restoring it to its original shape and size. A crown protects and strengthens tooth structure that cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations Although there are several types of crowns, porcelain (tooth-colored crown) are the most popular, because they resemble your natural teeth. They are highly durable and will last many years, but like most dental restorations, they may eventually need to be replaced. Porcelain crowns are made to match the shape, size, and color or your teeth giving you a natural, long-lasting beautiful smile.

Reasons for Crowns

  • Broken or fractured teeth
  • Cosmetic enhancement
  • Decayed teeth
  • Fractured fillings
  • Large fillings
  • Tooth has a root canal

Bridges

A dental bridge is a fixed (non-removable) appliance and is an excellent way to replace missing teeth. There are several types of bridges. You and your dentist will discuss the best options for your particular case. The “traditional bridge” is the most popular type and is usually made of porcelain fused to metal. Porcelain fixed bridges are most popular because they resemble your natural teeth. This type of bridge consists of two crowns that go over two anchoring teeth (abutment teeth) and are attached to pontics (artificial teeth), filling the gap created by one or more missing teeth. Dental bridges are highly durable and will last many years; however, they may need replacement or need to be re-cemented due to normal wear.

Reasons for a fixed bridge

  • Fill space of missing teeth
  • Maintain facial shape
  • Prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position
  • Restore chewing and speaking ability
  • Restore your smile
  • Upgrade from a removable partial denture to a permanent dental appliance

Soft Tissue Laser Dentistry

The soft tissue laser has many applications ranging from treatment of ulcers and cold sores to gum treatment to removal of diseased tissue. It is often a wonderful alternative in soft tissue surgical procedures. Here are some of the major benefits associated with laser dentistry:

  • Procedures performed using soft tissue dental lasers may not require sutures (stitches).
  • Certain laser dentistry procedures do not require anesthesia.
  • Laser dentistry minimizes bleeding because the high-energy light beam aids in the clotting (coagulation) of exposed blood vessels, thus inhibiting blood loss.
  • Bacterial infections are minimized because the high-energy beam sterilizes the area being worked on.
  • Damage to surrounding tissue is minimized.
  • Wounds heal faster and tissues can be regenerated.

What is CEREC?

CEREC is a dental crown made of porcelain that is milled and polished to match your natural smile. It doesn’t take long at all. In fact, we are able to do same-day restorations. You can have a complete crown done in one appointment, instead of having to wear a temporary crown for three weeks. Waxahachie Family Dentistry makes beautiful CEREC crowns using CAD-CAM software, and they will perfectly match the shape and color of your smile. CAD/CAM technology (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) is utilized to improve the design and creation of dental restorations, including crowns, veneers, inlays, and onlays.
